Penjing is the ancient Chinese art of depicting artistically formed trees, other plants and landscapes in. miniature. Bonsai is the Japanese art of growing and training miniature trees in containers.  It developed from the traditional Chinese art form of Penjing.

Penjing and Bonsai differ in that the former attempts to display plants and trees in a more natural manner often representing landscapes and scenes that one might experience in nature.
